The Junction Ice Creamery, 6056

The Junction is a childhood favourite of mine. And I'm delighted to report the old-fashioned ice creamery hasn't changed a bit, nor has it dropped it's standards in the fourteen years since i've been there!

The shop is clean and simple with a subtle retro California diner character. I love the mirrored vintage Coca-Cola advertisements that dress the walls, the traditional milkshake glasses, and the silver goblets they serve sundaes in.

I was warmed with a rush of saccharine nostalgia, just eyeing the ice cream freezer. The same classic, award-winning flavors have stood the test of time also.

A classic favourite is the Honeycomb Crunch; milky ice cream with giant squares of honeycomb.   The Mint Choc-Chip is one of the best of it's kind and I remember loving their Bubblegum as a kid too. Sadly they didn't have Smartie Surprise in the cabinet when I went - I hope this was only a temporary removal!

Almost as good as the ice cream itself, you must try their homemade chocolate sauce. They ladle the quality hot liquid onto your ice cream and it sets like ice magic- only far better!

Premium ice magic chocolate sauce!

Cookie & Cream, Coconut

A old-school ice creamery would not be real without the classic sundae and and goold 'ol Banana Split! The Junction do them so right - topped with whip cream, syrup, crushed Hazelnuts and wafer triangles.

love the retro logo

What's more awesome is that they sell all their award winning flavours (there are many!) in take-home tubs, in a variety of sizes. Joy!

Envy on Cambridge, 6014

This is my most favourite recent discovery. I drove past it a few months ago and have been itching to blog about it since.

If you're a devoted fan of Tutti Frutti (like myself) or other providers of fro-yo, gelato and ice cream out there, I encourage you to check out Envy for their unique take on frozen desserts.

The frozen yoghurt is much different from your standard, whipped fro-yo dispensed from a tap. Envy's version is scooped from a container and it's texture is like a hybrid of Sorbet and Ice cream.  One ample scoop will set you back $4.50 and two, $5.50. They also have a help yourself freezer with take home 1L containers for $14.50 - such good value!

New York Cheesecake frozen yoghurt, 1 scoop $4.50

Their most popular creation I as told by the owner (and rightly so), is New York Cheesecake frozen yoghurt.  A deliciously tart, slightly lemony base with bits of crushed biscuit throughout - joy!

Other flavours to get you salivating - coconut, a speckled cookies and cream, blood orange-choc-chip, sticky marshmallow and plain vanilla loaded with Gummi Bears. I tried all of these (yes, they're generous with testers) and can vouch for them all. I almost got the coconut which incorporated a creamy, flavoured base with the granular texture of desiccated coconut.  Perfect.

Churros are another one of their specialties and you can also get cute love-heart shaped choc-dipped ice creams on a stick.  Valentines Day gift?

They also do tea, coffee and light brunches, but you really come here for the frozen desserts :).

Collodel Ice Creams & Sorbets, 6076

Don't be fooled by the generic blue and white cups because what's inside is far from ordinary. Collodel is a family-run Ice cream parlor located on Haynes Street in Kalumunda. This place sells the real deal, and often misleads new customers with it's ho-hum exterior, making that first lick of Collodel gelato, even more memorable.

The dreamy gelato is made using traditional techniques that come from the Dolomite region in Northern Italy, and they make it every day, right there on the premises. How it should be.

Soft, rich, voluptuous gelato, the stuff here is on par with that I’ve tried in Italy and Spain. With flavours like Coconut, Crème Caramel, Coffee Cream, Vanilla Bean, Yoghurt & Berries, Cookies & Cream, it’s very hard to settle on a single serve. Faced with this difficulty, I ended up choosing three scoops; Cookies and Cream, Chocolate Rocher and the stand out flavour - Mascapone with Cointreau and Lemon Curd.

My goodness they were delicious! The Chocolate Rocher tasted like Nutella and is honestly the best chocolate/hazelnut version I've ever tasted. Eye-popping good. The Mascapone with Cointreau and lemon curd was exquisite; a perfect balance of tartness, sour and sweet. It tasted like a richly creamy cheesecake, stained with citrus. The Cookies & Cream was a treat too; a real vanilla bean base with crumbled bits of what tasted like half-baked tiny teddies.

At $4.50 for three scoops and $3.50 for two, I think this is pretty decent value. For amazing quality gelato, this is definitely worth the drive (and the calories). I'm calling it. Collodel Ice Cream & Sorbet; best gelato in Perth!
